LONDON: The United Kingdom (UK) Home Office notified on Thursday hundreds of Afghan refugees who have been staying in London for 18 months that they (refugees) must shift to 200 miles north to West Yorkshire within a week, British media reported.

Reports said that more than 9,000 Afghans are living in temporary accommodation across the UK following fleeing the Taliban. These refugees left their country as part of Operation Pitting, which was initiated in August 2021 to get UK nationals and Afghans who had worked alongside British troops out of the country after the Taliban seized power.

The then Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at the time that they will never forget the sacrifice rendered by Afghans. However, the UK Home Office has asked 40 families, including 150 children to move to another place near Leeds.

One of the refugees told the media that most of the Afghans have decided to hold protest against the relocation plan. A Home Office spokesman told the local media that the refugees were told a few months ago that they (refugees) would have to shift.
