LONDON: King Charles III of Britain on Friday thanked the public for their support in his first year as monarch, as he marked the 1st anniversary of the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
In a short statement, the 74-year-old British monarch recalled the “great affection” for his mother, her life and public service.
The monarch said that he is very grateful for the support and love that has been shown to his wife and himself during this year as they do their utmost to be of service to all of th epublic, AFP reported.
Commemorations will be low key on Friday, with the monarch — who is at his sprawling Scottish Highland estate of Balmoral — not likely at any official engagement.
His mother, who was on the throne for a record-breaking seventy years, died at Balmoral aged ninety-six after a period of declining health.
Queen avoided publicly marking her accession
Throughout her reign, Queen Elizabeth II did not publicly mark her accession, as it was also the anniversary of her own father King George VI’s death in 1952.
Last year, when the queen began her Platinum Jubilee year on 6 February, she spent the day in private at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk, eastern England.
