LONDON: UK’s top court rejected a bid on Wednesday by the semi-autonomous Scottish government in Edinburgh to arrange a new referendum regarding independence without seeking Britain’s consent.
The unanimous decision by the Supreme Court acted against the efforts by the Scottish nationalist government for a second plebiscite in the next coming year.

First Minister of Scotland and leader of the SNP Party, Nicola Sturgeon has said that she respected the ruling of the apex court today but is “disappointed”.
Taking to Twitter Sturgeon said that if Scotland cannot decide its future without UK Parliament’s consent, then the image of Britain as a partnership was exposed as a “myth.”
Scotland does not have mandate to legislate referendum
The Supreme Court’s Scottish president, Robert Reed, said that the authority to arrange a referendum is “reserved” to the UK parliament.
The Scottish parliament does not have the mandate to legislate for a referendum on the independence of Scotland, Reed added.
The reports emerged about the Sturgeon’s led Scottish government is committed to hold a plebiscite in October 2023.
The British government, which administers the constitutional affairs of the whole of Britain, has continuously rejected to provide Scotland the power to hold a referendum.
