DUBAI, UAE: The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has pardoned 57 Bangladeshi nationals convicted in July for protesting across various emirates, the UAE news agency WAM reported.
The pardon includes canceling their sentences and initiating deportation procedures. The UAE attorney-general has instructed halting the implementation of the sentences and starting the deportation process.
He also emphasized the importance of respecting the UAE’s laws while noting that expressing opinions is legally protected.
The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal had sentenced three Bangladeshis to life imprisonment, 53 to ten years, and one individual, who had entered the UAE illegally, to eleven years for their involvement in protests against Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
This decision comes amidst heightened tensions following political protests in Bangladesh.
