ISLAMABAD: Emirates, one of the UAE’s leading airlines, has successfully operated a flight powered by 100% eco-friendly fuel to meet carbon emission targets.
The Dubai-based carrier flew the Boeing 777-300ER, powering one of its engines with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), for more than an hour near Dubai’s coast, making it the only flight in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to have been operated using only SAF.
‘Flight marks a new achievement in aviation’
Adel Al Redha, Chief Operation Officer (COO) of Emirates, said the flight marks a new achievement in the aviation industry.
SAF is critical to the aviation industry to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. However, the fuel’s production must increase rapidly from current levels at an economically feasible cost to achieve this goal.
Earlier this year, Emirates announced a collaboration with major aerospace and biofuels firms, including GE Aerospace, Neste, Boeing, a Finnish biofuels producer, Honeywell, and Virent – a Wisconsin-based renewable fuels company – to secure and formulate a SAF blend similar to conventional jet fuel.
