UAE Foreign Minister and EU Envoy Discuss Bilateral Cooperation

LONDON: The UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, held a meeting with the European Union’s Special Representative for the Gulf region, Luigi Di Maio, in a demonstration of the commitment to enhancing cooperation and strengthening relations between the UAE and EU member countries.

The meeting took place with a focus on fostering collaboration across various sectors, including economics, trade, investment, energy, and climate, Emirates News Agency reported on Wednesday.

During their discussions, both Sheikh Abdullah and Di Maio emphasized the importance of the ties between the UAE and EU nations. They explored avenues to further deepen cooperation, recognizing the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships in areas of common interest.

One significant topic on the agenda was the UAE’s preparations to host the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference (COP28), scheduled to commence on November 30 in Expo City Dubai. The UAE and the EU are actively engaging in cooperative efforts related to climate action and data sharing, with a shared commitment to addressing the global challenge of climate change.

Relations Between UAE and EU Nations

Luigi Di Maio praised the strong relations between the UAE and EU countries and expressed his support for the successful hosting of COP28 in Dubai. He highlighted the transformative impact that the conference could have on global climate action, contributing to meaningful progress in addressing environmental concerns.

In addition to climate-related matters, the two sides discussed current regional and global events, demonstrating a shared interest in promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in the Gulf region and beyond.

Luigi Di Maio, who formerly served as Italy’s Foreign Minister, assumed the role of the EU’s first Special Envoy for the Gulf region on May 15, 2023, with the primary objective of strengthening diplomatic ties and collaboration with Gulf nations.
