WASHINGTON: U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, founder and co-chairperson of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus announced that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Ms. Jackson Lee, a 74-year-old Democrat from Houston who has previously battled breast cancer, did not disclose the stage of her cancer in her statement.

In September 2022, the Government of Pakistan awarded her the Hilal-e-Pakistan, a prestigious civil award, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to Pakistan. This honor highlighted her advocacy for U.S. assistance to Pakistan following devastating floods, her efforts to enhance bilateral relations to improve lives in both countries, and her dedication to a strong and effective Pakistan Congressional Caucus.

She was joined by delegation members, including Congressman Thomas Suozzi, who announced his intention to reactivate the caucus, and Congressman Al Green at the ceremony in Islamabad.

“As I undergo treatment, I may be occasionally absent from Congress, but my office will continue to provide the essential constituent services you deserve and expect,” Ms. Jackson Lee stated on Sunday night.

Ms. Jackson further said, “As a member of Congress, I’ve been honored to lead the fight for justice and equality for all, especially the disadvantaged and dispossessed. Today, my fight is more personal, but I will approach it with the same courage and faith.”
