HANOI, Vietnam: Typhoon Yagi weakened to a tropical depression on Sunday after causing extensive damage in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, and resulting in at least three deaths. The storm, initially a super typhoon, wreaked havoc by flooding neighborhoods, downing thousands of trees, and damaging houses. Authorities have warned of ongoing heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides in northern Vietnam. The storm has claimed at least seven lives and injured dozens since making landfall on Saturday.

In China, Typhoon Yagi caused four fatalities on Hainan Island and led to economic losses and widespread power outages. Meanwhile, the Philippines, the first country affected by Yagi, raised its death toll to 20, with 22 people still missing.

While Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport reopened after closing on Saturday due to the storm, rescue operations were underway in coastal provinces to locate missing individuals as conditions allowed. The Vietnamese government also reported waves up to 4 meters high and ongoing power cuts in coastal areas due to the storm’s impact.
