MEXICO CITY: Two of the 4 US citizens kidnapped after crossing over the border and entering northeastern Mexico have been found dead, a high Mexican official said on Tuesday.
Americo Villarreal, governor of Tamaulipas state, said that the attorney general’s office confirmed that of the 4 abductees 2 of them are dead, one is injured, and the other is unharmed.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had said on Sunday that the US citizens had crossed into Matamoros, Tamaulipas state, on Friday in a minivan with North Carolina license plates.
It offered a 50,000 dollars reward for help leading to the return of the victims and the arrest of the perpetrators.
US citizens kidnapped from Mexico
The FBI said that shortly after crossing into Mexico, unidentified armed men fired upon the passengers in the minivan. All 4 Americans were placed in a vehicle and taken from the scene by gunmen.
Mexican President A Obrador said in a statement on Monday that the victims were believed to have entered Mexico to buy medicines and got caught up in a fight between criminal groups.
A Mexican national was also killed in the incident.
