Two More Killed in Violence-hit Manipur State of India

GUWAHATI: Tensions continued to escalate in the Indian Manipur state after a new heavy firefight was reported between the Meitei- and Kuki-dominated Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.

According to the Manipur Police, two people were killed in the shooting in the villages close to Naransena. Seven people sustained bullet injuries. Responding to the incident, District Police, Assam Rifles, Army, and Central forces stationed in the vicinity responded and took control of the situation, said police.

A village volunteer allegedly died today as shots were fired at nearby communities, according to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum. The deceased has been identified as Jangminlun Gangte, age 30.

According to media reports, there is a fierce gunfight going on between the Khoirentak and Thinunggei areas.

In another incident, militants opened fire at a farmer from the foothills, according to media reports.

Salam Jotin, 40, a Naransena Ward 8 resident and the son of Iboton, was shot this morning while attending to his paddy field in Thinungei Maning Leikai.

He was shot in the chest and is currently being treated at a private hospital in Imphal. His condition is critical, according to doctors.

Since violence erupted in the northeastern state of Manipur in May, more than 140 people have been killed in violence.
