KABUL: At least two people were killed and six others wounded in an explosion in Afghanistan’s eastern Parwan province, Fazl-ur-Rahim Maskinyar, spokesman of the provincial police department, said on Saturday.
The spokesman said that the blast took place in an iron market on the New Road in the first security district of Charikar City, the provincial capital of Parwan, on Saturday afternoon.
The incident is still under investigation and results of the findings will be announced to the public, the spokesman said.
Afghanistan is one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world, where unexploded ordnances and landmines left over from the past four decades of wars, claim a huge amount of lives, mostly children.
According to authorities, the explosion happened when explosive materials gathered in a piece of iron detonated.
Maskinyar emphasized that the injured have been transported to the Parwan provincial civilian hospital, and an investigation into the incident has begun.
In recent months, Afghanistan has experienced increased insecurity, with incidents of violence and attacks becoming more frequent. The volatile situation has been exacerbated by the resurgence of ISIS activities in the region, posing significant challenges to the Taliban regime.
