ARBIL, Iraq: Two people were killed in a strike blamed on Turkey, in northern region of Iraq on Tuesday, security and health officials said.

Turkey frequently carries out ground and air offensives on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions. The party recognized terrorists by western countries has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state — in northern Iraq.

A security official on condition of anonymity said two civilians were killed and another wounded in a Turkish strike on a remote village in the mountainous region of Akre in Dohuk province of northern Iraq.

A health official in the region confirmed the death toll however, he didn’t specify if those killed were civilians.

Turkey, over the past 25 years, has operated several dozen military bases in northern Iraq in its war against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the European Union.

Attacks on Turkish military bases in northern Iraq region in December and January have killed 18 soldiers so far.

Both Baghdad and the regional government of the Iraqi Kurdistan region have been accused of tolerating Turkey’s military actions to preserve their close economic relations.

President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan in October, said that Ankara would intensify its strikes against the PKK in Iraq and neighbouring Syria.
