JERUSALEM: An assailant shot and injured two people in east Jerusalem on Saturday, Israeli medics said, hours after a Palestinian attacker killed seven Israeli people outside a synagogue in east Jerusalem in one of the deadliest shootings in years.
Police said the suspect was killed following the latest gun attack in the Silwan neighborhood, just outside the old, walled city of Jerusalem.
Magen David Adom emergency response service of Israel identified the victims as two men, aged 47 and 23, with gunshot injuries to their upper bodies. It did not identify those involved in the attack.
Police had earlier announced that it had arrested 42 people in connection with Friday’s synagogue shooting incident.
The mass shooting unfolded as a young resident of Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem opened fire during the Jewish Sabbath in the synagogue in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood.
Tense situation in east Jerusalem after Israeli forces’ deadliest raid
The incident occurred a day after one of the deadliest military raids in the occupied West Bank in roughly two decades, rocket fire from militants in the Gaza Strip, and retaliatory air strikes from Israeli forces.
There have several calls to de-escalate the spiralling violence; however, tensions are rising.
Several Arab nations with ties with Israel- including Egypt, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates — condemned the synagogue shooting.
The Lebanese group Hezbollah, Israel’s most prominent enemy, praised the attack as “heroic,” voicing “absolute support for all the steps taken by the Palestinian resistance factions.”
Police killed the gunman at the synagogue during a shootout that followed a brief car chase after the attack.
There has been no indication that the attacker had prior involvement in a militant activity or was a member of an established Palestinian armed group.
