PESHAWAR: The Directorate General of Health Services Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has specified two hospitals in the provincial capital Peshawar to deal with suspected monkeypox (Mpox) cases coming to Pakistan from abroad.
A statement released here stated that the Torkham border crossing would be checked by Landi Kotal Hospital near the Pak-Afghan border. The hospital has also established an isolation ward for Mpox-positive patients.
Similarly, Mpox cases reported from Bacha Khan International Airport would be handled by Police Services Hospital Peshawar. It is important to note that Mpox is a contagious viral illness that can affect people and other animals. Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that blisters and then crusts.
Dr Farrah of the Department of Zoology said the symptoms typically remain for two to four weeks. The disease could spread from infected animals, handling infected meat or via scratches or bites.
She said human-to-human transmission could occur through exposure to infected body fluids or contaminated objects and possibly through airborne routes.
