KYIV: A Russian drone attack early Monday killed two people and injured three others in the western Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi, the Mayor said.
In separate messages on social media, Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn said that two rescue workers were killed in the drone attack.
In the second statement after reporting the first death earlier, the Mayor said, unfortunately, another person also died in the hospital. He said doctors failed to save the life of another rescuer.
The victims were 31-year-old Sergiy Sevruk, and 21-year-old Vladyslav Dvorak, Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko shared on Facebook.
The two rescue workers worked on the aftermath of the first attack when “the enemy struck again, deliberately,” Klymenko said.
Russian military says its drone hit Ukraine’s special operations command center
The Russian military said it hit Ukraine’s “special operations ‘West’ command center” near Khmelnytskyi city.
“In the jurisdiction of the village of Brovary in the Kyiv region, the center of electronic intelligence of Ukraine’s armed forces was hit,” the military added.
The head of the military administration in the city said there was no damage or casualties in Kyiv after nine drones were shot down over the capital.
The official, Sergiy Popko, said Russian troops were trying “to exhaust our air defences.” He said the attack had come in two separate phases.
The Ukrainian army said it had downed 11 out of 14 drones deployed by Moscow’s security forces overnight.
Russia has been launching drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, spurring Kyiv to strengthen its air defence systems with Western support.
The drone attacks have plunged millions into the dark and cold in the middle of winter.
