ASHGABAT: Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdymukhamedov has initiated an “unprecedented” anti-smoking drive, asking the people to rid themselves completely of tobacco within two-year, local media reported on Sunday.

In a statement, the President said that the authorities would take action against illegal importations of tobacco products and their sales, including electronic cigarettes and shisha pipes. He said that they would launch a vast anti-tobacco drive of unprecedented size to help develop the tobacco-less countries of the world.

Strict anti-smoking steps, including bans on advertising and smoking in public areas, are already in place in the country. Berdymukhamedov wants the nation to be tobacco-free in 2025. About 20 young men were captured at its borders for “smuggling tobacco,” state media said Thursday.
