ANKARA, Turkiye: Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan convened an urgent meeting with law enforcement officials and the Ministry of Justice following warnings from Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), regarding a potential coup attempt, as reported by Sabah.

The Ankara Prosecutor General’s Office launched an investigation into three police officers from the capital’s department for their alleged ties to the criminal organization Ayhan Bora Kaplan. Search operations were conducted at their residences as part of the inquiry.

Expressing concerns over a possible conspiracy, Erdogan’s political ally Bahçeli cautioned against dismissing the threat merely by removing certain police personnel. He raised alarms about the looming possibility of another coup attempt within the country.

The specter of a coup looms large in Türkiye’s recent history, with a failed coup attempt in 2016 that resulted in the loss of 241 lives and left over 2,000 individuals injured in clashes across the nation. In the aftermath, over 40,000 individuals were detained on suspicion of involvement in the coup, leading to the imposition of a state of emergency for several months.

The developments underscore the ongoing fragility of Türkiye’s political landscape and the persistent challenges faced by the government in ensuring stability and security within the country.
