ANKARA: Turkiye has winded up rescue efforts in all the affected provinces except the two hardest hit by last week’s deadliest quake that so far killed more than 46,000 people, the Turkish disaster agency said Sunday.

Turkish disaster agency’s chief Yunus Sezer told reporters in Ankara that search and rescue operations have been completed in several provinces. He said the search and rescue efforts will continue in hardest-hit Hatay and Kahramanmaras provinces. The epicentre of the massive earthquake on February 6 was in Kahramanmaras province.

The head of the Turkish disaster management authority said the rescue operations have been ended in most of the earthquake-hit areas.

Quake death toll expected to increase

Over 46,000 people have been killed after the deadliest earthquake jolted Turkiye and Syria on February 6. The death toll is expected to increase, with nearly 345,000 residential apartments in Turkiye having been destroyed, and several people are still missing.

In one of the last efforts to rescue people out of the debris, 12 days after the quake, emergency teams started clearing rubble at a rescue site in Antakya.
