MOSCOW: In a bid to address pressing regional issues, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to embark on a two-day diplomatic visit to Russia, starting Thursday. The talks come after Fidan’s recent discussions with Ukrainian officials, signaling Turkey’s proactive role in fostering regional stability.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will host Fidan in Moscow, with the agenda encompassing significant topics such as the ongoing situations in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, and Transcaucasia. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, said that the talks would aim to foster a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics in the region.
Notably, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also set to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future. The focal point of these discussions is the revival of a bilateral agreement aimed at facilitating secure grain shipments across the Black Sea.
Turkish President’s Mediator Role Between Russia and Ukraine
Erdogan’s adept diplomacy has positioned Turkey as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine, a role further solidified by its involvement in negotiating a crucial agreement amidst the conflict. Last year, amid the ongoing conflict, a historic deal was brokered by Turkey, allowing for the transportation of grain from three Ukrainian ports across the Black Sea.
