ANKARA: Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met with UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell in Ankara on Tuesday for talks.
Cavusoglu expressed gratitude for the international community’s support during our difficult times on Twitter, thanking Russell for her solidarity visit.
Foreign minister’s visit
The visit of Russell comes after two powerful earthquakes jolted southern Turkey on Feb. 6, killing at least 44,370 people. The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes struck Adana, Adiyaman, Hatay, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Elazig, Gaziantep, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa, as well as 10 other provinces.
The devastating earthquakes have affected over 13 million people. Several countries in the region, including Lebanon and Syria felt the strong tremors that hit Turkey in less than ten hours.
Condolences have poured in worldwide, with many countries sending rescue teams and aid to Turkey.
