BAGHDAD: A Turkish drone strike on Friday killed three members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Iraq.
According to a statement by, Iraqi Kurdistan’s counter-terrorism service a vehicle which belonged to the PKK was hit by the drone strike near the northern city of Sulaimaniya. It said a senior PKK member, his driver and a guard were killed in the attack.
Turkiye regularly conducts air strikes on PKK militants in northern Iraq and has dozens of posts in Iraqi territory.
This month top officials from Türkiye and Iraq held talks in Ankara for a high-level security meeting to address a common threat by the PKK.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to Iraq in April said Baghdad recognizes the need of eliminating the Kurdish PKK militia and is willing to take action towards this goal.
The PKK, recognized as a terrorist group by v, the US, and the European Union, initiated armed conflict against the Turkish state in 1984, resulting in significant casualties over decades of insurgency.
In March Iraqi officials announced the National Security Council’s decision to declare the PKK a “banned organization” in Iraq. Ankara welcomed this decision in the joint statement issued later.
