Turkish Court Sentences Opposition Politician to Jail

ISTANBUL: A Turkish court has sent the opposition politician Ekrem Imamoglu to jail and imposed a ban on him, media reported on Wednesday. 

According to Reuters, a few thousand supporters of Ekrem Imamoglu rallied following Imamoglu’s call on his social media account for them to assemble. Reports said that the opposition politician is viewed as a potential challenger to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in the next elections.

Turkish Court verdict 

The court awarded two years and seven months in prison along with the ban for insulting public officials in a speech in 2019. The verdict comes just a few months ahead of Turkey’s scheduled presidential and parliamentary polls. The opposition in Turkey has yet to decide on its presidential candidate.
