ANKARA: Syria, Turkiye, and Russia aim to hold a meeting of their foreign ministers this month and possibly before the middle of next week, a Turkish official said on Wednesday. The meeting would mark the highest-level talks between Damascus and Ankara since the Syrian war began in 2011.
Foreign Ministers
Turkiye has played a major part in the conflict in Syria, supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad’s opponents and sending forces into the north, Arab media reported. Russia is Assad’s key ally and Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked for reconciliation with Turkiye.
The official told the media on the condition of anonymity that the high-level meeting could take place either before or after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the US on January 18.
The official added that the meeting will be arranged in Moscow or somewhere else. Earlier, Syrian and Turkish defense ministers held talks in Russia last month to discuss border security issues.
