ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Turkey no longer holds any expectations from the European Union (EU) after waiting at its door for four decades.
Speaking before an inaugural session of the Turkish Parliament, Erdogan expressed his frustration, stating that despite Turkey keeping its promises to the EU, the bloc had failed to reciprocate in kind.
President Erdogan:
– We have kept all the promises we have made to the EU, but they have kept almost none of theirs
– We no longer expect anything from the EU, which has kept us waiting at its door for 60 years
– If the EU doesn't correct its mistakes, particularly about visas,… pic.twitter.com/eLWzhtgYmo— TRT World (@trtworld) October 1, 2023
“We have kept all our promises made to the EU but they have kept almost none of theirs,” President Erdogan maintained. He further asserted that he would not accept any new demands or conditions regarding Turkey’s accession process to join the European Union. Erdogan’s remarks underscore the growing disillusionment between Turkey and the EU, with longstanding negotiations for Turkey’s membership in the union facing significant obstacles and delays.
Erdogan’s disappointment with the EU was further exacerbated by a recent judgement from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The court condemned Turkey for convicting a teacher, Yuksel Yalcinkaya, in connection with the 2016 attempted coup, alleging that he had downloaded an encrypted messaging app linked with the alleged plotters. The ruling highlighted violations of Yalcinkaya’s rights, potentially setting a significant precedent for thousands of similar cases awaiting judgment before the ECHR.
Turkey has long accused a group led by the US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen of orchestrating the failed attempt to oust Erdogan. The government claims that a messaging app called ByLock was used to coordinate the plot. Erdogan, referring to the ECHR ruling, stated on Sunday that this decision was the final straw.
“(Turkey) will not turn back in its fight against this band of traitors,” President Erdogan declared, emphasizing the nation’s determination to pursue justice against those involved in the coup attempt.
Erdogan’s stern words reflect the growing frustration within Turkey over perceived injustices and unmet expectations, raising questions about the future of Turkey-EU relations in the face of these challenges.
Erdogan Condemns Terrorist Attack on Parliament of Turkey
Meanwhile, a few hours after an attack near the country’s parliament in Ankara, President Erdogan defiantly addressed the nation, condemning the assailants and expressing resilience in the face of terrorism.
“The villains who threaten the peace and security of citizens have not achieved their goals and will never achieve them,” Erdogan declared. His statement came after two police officers were injured in the attack, which targeted the security forces near the Turkish parliament building.
Erdogan’s firm response highlights Turkey’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
