ISLAMABAD: A strike of public sector transport company workers brought life to a standstill in Tunisia’s capital Tunis on Monday.

The cause of the agitation was the late payment of bonuses and wages by the Tunisian authorities.

Speaking to reporters, Secretary general of the Association of Public Transport Operators Wajih Zaidi said that the strike would continue till the government and Ministry of Finance announced a date by which the due bonuses and salaries would be paid.

Being part of the strike in Tunis, both metro and bus services also came to a halt.

Hundreds of striking transport workers gather in capital of Tunisia

Turkish media reported that hundreds of transport workers demanded payment of their salary as they gathered at the capital’s Kasbah Square.

In the previous week, taxi drivers in the capital went on strike to protest poor living conditions and rising fuel prices.

Tunisia is mired in a deep political crisis since President Kais Saied in 2021 overthrew the government, suspended parliament and took over executive power.
