ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump warned that additional military strikes could follow if Iran escalates conflict, after Iranian state media confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Israel-US coordinated air attacks.
Iranian authorities said Khamenei died from injuries sustained during strikes on sites described as linked to national security decision-making in and around Tehran.
Speaking publicly, Trump said the United States would respond decisively if Iran targets American personnel or regional partners. He did not outline specific military plans but signalled readiness for further action if Tehran retaliates.
Shipping and energy markets are reacting sharply to the situation. Oil and LNG traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed, with tankers halting, diverting, or reversing course after Iranian broadcasts warned that the passage was “practically closed.”
The Strait of Hormuz links the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and handles roughly 20% of the world’s seaborne crude oil and LNG flows each day. Ship-tracking data showed vessels backing up on both sides of the strait, including oil tankers from Saudi Arabia, Oman, and China, and at least 14 LNG carriers from Qatar showing slowed or reversed transit.
Major shipping companies, including Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, and CMA CGM, have suspended operations in the region. National navies, including the US and UK, have issued advisories warning of navigational risks, while energy traders monitor potential supply disruptions. Early market reactions indicate crude oil prices have jumped, reflecting concerns over disruption.
The United Nations and several governments urged restraint and called for diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.
The situation remains fluid, with official accounts from the parties involved differing and independent verification limited.
