WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Washington could consider military action against Colombia if cocaine production and trafficking continue unabated, adopting a hardline tone as his administration intensifies its regional counter-narcotics strategy.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump accused Colombia’s leadership of allowing drug flows that fuel the U.S. narcotics crisis, according to Reuters.

He accused Colombia’s government of allowing drug production that fuels illegal narcotics flows into the United States, and indicated that Washington would not tolerate such activities for long, according to the news agency.

When asked directly whether the United States would pursue a military operation against Colombia, Trump responded, “It sounds good to me,” reinforcing his administration’s willingness to consider all options in its efforts to curb drug trafficking and protect U.S. interests.

The comments followed a dramatic U.S. operation targeting Venezuela, in which President Nicolas Maduro was captured in a surprise raid and transported to New York to face drug-trafficking charges.

The development marked a significant escalation in Washington’s regional counter-narcotics and law enforcement strategy, signaling a renewed push to hold leaders accountable for alleged involvement in the drug trade.

The world has reacted with concern to the U.S. operation against Venezuela, widely seen as a controversial move and a potential violation of international law. Critics warn it sets a dangerous precedent for unilateral actions against sovereign nations, while some supporters defend it as a firm step against drug trafficking. Analysts say the move risks regional instability and reinforces perceptions of the U.S. acting above international norms.
