WASHINGTON: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has launched his 2024 presidential drive, teeing up what is expected to be an unpleasant rivalry with Republican primary frontrunner former President Donald Trump as he promised to “lead our great American comeback”, AFP reported on Wednesday.
According to Western media, a much-anticipated Twitter event in which Ron DeSantis planned to announce his presidential bid was frequently disrupted when Twitter’s servers seemingly could not handle the flow of traffic.
Trump Rival DeSantis Files to Run for White House
Several Twitter users stated that the social media app crashed as they tried to listen to the event where Elon Musk joined DeSantis for the message. When the event continued following the frequent early bugs, DeSantis was asked a sequence of overwhelmingly friendly questions that permitted him to easily highlight his talking points.
Florida Governor DeSantis’ entrance into the presidential race immediately sets up a direct clash with former President Donald Trump, as he also announced to run for the White House.
He was considered a rising Republican leader but has seen his prospects dented by months of relentless assaults from the ex-president. Ron DeSantis said in a video posted on social media, “I am Ron DeSantis, and I am running for US president to lead America”.
He filed his documentation with the Election Commission, local media reported. DeSantis was a baseball player at Yale. He has a Harvard law degree and completed 6 years of active duty with the US Navy, including serving in Iraq. He also spent 5 years in the US Congress.
Long viewed as the most practical challenger to Trump, but he still lacks the favorite’s national profile.
During his time in office, Ron DeSantis’s enacted high-profile conservative legislation to relax gun-ownership laws, curb gender identity education in educational institutions, tighten voting regulations and rules, and also limit abortions. DeSantis is a winner, undefeated in races for governor and Congress.
DeSantis said that the time for excuses was over and they must reject the culture of losing that had impacted their party in recent years.
Other Republican candidates include ex-US envoy to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson and tech executive Vivek Ramaswamy.
