WASHINGTON, USA: In his $100 million lawsuit against the US Department of Justice, Donald Trump claims that the FBI raid on his Florida home in Mar-a-Lago in 2022 was an instance of “political persecution.” The claim targets Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray, accusing them of intentionally seeking to harm the former president. The raid, conducted on August 8, 2022, was part of an investigation to recover classified documents that Trump allegedly took from the White House and kept unsecured at his home.

Trump, who faces 31 counts of “willful retention of national defense information,” argues that the raid violated established protocols typically used with former U.S. presidents. He is seeking $100 million in punitive damages and at least $15 million to cover legal costs. The Federal Tort Claims Act was used to submit the suit, and the Justice Department has 180 days to reply. If no settlement is reached, the case could proceed to federal court.

This lawsuit is one of many that Trump is presently dealing with in the court system. Aside from the Mar-a-Lago case, Trump is also charged in Georgia and Washington for his attempts to rig the 2020 presidential election results, and he was found guilty on 34 counts in New York of fabricating financial documents.
