TOKYO: Severe tropical storm ‘Lan’ made landfall in Japan early Tuesday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the area.
AFP reported emergency warnings of landslides have been issued while rivers in the areas have seen a massive rise in their water levels.
Due to the typhoon more than 800 international and domestic flights were cancelled and thousands of homes were left without electricity.
Tropical Storm ‘Lan’ Makes Landfall in Japan
The ‘Lan’ made landfall in western Japan early on Tuesday, forcing local authorities to issue flood and landslide warnings.
It occurred in the Pacific Ocean, and made a landfall some 400 km southwest of Tokyo.
The typhoon came very close to another typhoon Khanun during Japan’s peak holiday season causing heavy rains in central and western Japan.
According to local authorities, more than 21,000 houses in Japan were left without electricity. High-speed trains were also suspended affecting thousands in the area while more than 100 stores were shut due to the fear of the tropical storm.
Japan’s weather agency has predicted more rains and heavy gusts in the next 24 hours.
Typhoon Lan had winds with a speed of 150 kph and was moving towards the northwest and western parts of the island of Honshu.
