PARIS: A solo painting exhibition by Barkaat, titled “Silent Horizons – A Journey Through Brush and Soul,” was organized at Pakistan House in Paris, displaying the unique intersection of disability and artistry in a display of remarkable beauty.

The event drew a diverse audience, including numerous ambassadors, art enthusiasts, and individuals from all walks of life. Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, the Ambassador of Pakistan to France, welcomed the guests and emphasized that “Silent Horizons” highlighted the remarkable blend of disability and creativity. He noted that the exhibition was more than just a collection of paintings; it represented a powerful life story.

Who is Barkaat?

The ambassador told the audience that 16 years ago, a life-changing accident resulted in brain damage, leaving Barkaat paralyzed and aphasic. Yet, this adversity sparked his journey of self-discovery through painting.

He described the exhibition as a testament to the indomitable human spirit, asserting that disability is not a barrier but a forge for exceptional talent. The paintings illustrate a triumph over challenges.

Barkaat has not only used painting as a means of communication; his determination led him to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors from Punjab University and an M. Phil in Visual Arts from the National College of Arts in Lahore, where his thesis focused on disability.

Having exhibited both nationally and internationally, Barkaat’s work has been pivotal in strengthening the Disability Arts Movement in Pakistan, promoting the inclusion of individuals with special needs through art and creative empowerment.

They explored various dimensions, from medical and scientific to social issues, illuminated through Barkaat’s narrative of art and disability.

Ms. Vera Lacoeuilhe, the Chairperson of the UNESCO Executive Board and the chief guest, also addressed the audience. Guests were thrilled to meet Barkaat, applauding his achievements and expressing keen interest in his artistic work.
