ISLAMABAD:  The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) has introduced a new grading system for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examinations in order to promote transparency, fairness, and accuracy in student evaluation.

IBCC shared the details of key features of the new grading system and stated that it will be a 10-point grading system (A++, A+, A, B++, B+, B, C, D, E, U) replaces the 7-point system (A-1, A, B, C, D, E, F).

Similarly, passing marks increased to 40 percent from 33 percent, while grades and grade points reported instead of absolute scores. The Committee said that grade points calculate Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

The main objective of the grading system to control grading inflation, minimize competition for maximum marks, and ensure correct reflection of student achievement and learning. The phased introduction starting from the 2024 academic year. The new system will be applicable to grades 9 (SSC) and 11 (HSSC) initially. However, universities in the country will consider both old and new grading systems during admissions for 2024-25.  From 2025, colleges as well as universities will refer to CGPA and grades only.

Reports said that the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) have been informed. The committee said that the examination boards will explain the new grading system on result slips. The aim of these reforms is to enhance the credibility and reliability of Pakistan’s education system, providing a more fairs and accurate assessment of student performance.
