TOKYO: Toyota Motor announced on Tuesday that it achieved a landmark by selling 11.2 million vehicles in 2023, securing its position as the world’s leading automaker for the fourth consecutive year.
The Japanese company experienced a notable 7.2% increase in global sales last year, encompassing units like Hino Motors and Daihatsu, with a significant boost from overseas sales reaching 8.9 million vehicles.
Meanwhile, its closest competitor, Volkswagen Group, reported a 12% surge in deliveries to 9.2 million cars, signaling a recovery from post-pandemic challenges as supply chain constraints eased.
Toyota’s parent-only vehicles, which include the Toyota and Lexus brands, hit a new high of 10.3 million vehicles sold in 2023, with gasoline-electric hybrids constituting about a third of the total, while battery electric vehicles contributed less than 1%.
