BEIJING, China: In a tragic incident reported by state media on Wednesday, a ferocious tornado tore through parts of Suqian city in Jiangsu province, eastern China, claiming the lives of five individuals and leaving four seriously injured.
The calamity unfolded at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
State broadcaster CCTV detailed the extent of the devastation caused by the tornado, which annihilated 137 homes and wreaked havoc on crop land and pig farms in the affected region. Heart-wrenching videos circulated online, depicting the aftermath of the disaster, with cars strewn about and debris swirling in the air above several-story-high buildings. The force of the tornado was evident as vehicles, including at least one flipped onto its side, bore witness to nature’s wrath.
Efforts to restore normalcy were swiftly underway, as CCTV reported that power and road services had been reinstated in the impacted area, aiming to aid the affected population in their recovery and recuperation.
Tornadoes are a rarity in China, yet the devastation they bring has been witnessed in Jiangsu province in recent years. Tragically, this is not the first time the region has grappled with the deadly consequences of a tornado. Last year, one person lost their life to a tornado in Jiangsu, while four souls were claimed by the destructive force in 2021. Furthermore, on the same fateful day, the city of Wuhan faced its own tragic encounter with a tornado, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
