CHARLESTON, S.C: Jessica Pegula, the top seed, narrowly escaped an upset bid from Amanda Anisimova in a fiercely contested all-American encounter during the opening round of the Credit One Charleston Open.

Pegula managed to rally back after dropping the first set and then squandering a lead in the third, ultimately clinching victory with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) triumph in Charleston, South Carolina. Despite Anisimova’s resilient efforts, saving 11 of 15 break points, Pegula’s unwavering resolve saw her through, particularly evident in her dominance on service points during the decisive third set.

Meanwhile, other notable results saw Maria Sakkari of Greece and Magda Linette of Poland securing victories, alongside a slew of American players including Sloane Stephens, Danielle Collins, Taylor Townsend, Ashlyn Krueger, and Caroline Dolehide.

However, the night brought disappointment for Madison Keys, who succumbed to Jacqueline Cristian of Romania. In a separate event, the Copa Colsanitas Zurich in Bogota, Brazil’s Laura Pigossi stunned fifth seed Nadia Podoroska with a commanding performance, while Tatjana Maria of Germany and several Spanish players also advanced in their respective matches.

Further winners included Anca Todoni of Romania, Hailey Baptiste of the United States, Sara Errani of Italy, and Jule Niemeier of Germany, setting the stage for an eventful continuation of the tournament, with top seed Marie Bouzkova yet to take the court.
