KUALA LUMPUR: The short video app TikTok has expressed its commitment to proactively address concerns raised by the Malaysian government regarding compliance with local laws. A spokesperson for TikTok emphasized the company’s respect for local laws and regulations and its dedication to addressing the issues at hand.

We take the concerns raised by the Malaysian government seriously and are fully committed to addressing them in a proactive manner, stated a spokesperson for TikTok in an email response on Thursday.

In response to Malaysia’s apprehensions, TikTok has initiated plans to hold meetings with the country’s communications regulator in the upcoming week. These meetings are intended to demonstrate TikTok’s dedication to complying with Malaysian regulations and to find solutions to the issues that have been raised.

Malaysia’s communications minister, Fahmi Fadzil, had expressed dissatisfaction with TikTok’s efforts to control defamatory or misleading content on its platform. He further noted that the social media platform had not met several local regulatory requirements, although specific laws were not specified.

Following meetings with TikTok representatives, Fahmi conveyed additional concerns related to content distribution and advertising purchases. These concerns were brought to light due to complaints from businesses, the general public, and media agencies.

TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has faced increased scrutiny in Southeast Asia, particularly after Indonesia’s recent decision to halt transactions on the platform. This move came after Indonesia implemented a ban on e-commerce activities on social media platforms. Additionally, Vietnam has initiated an investigation into harmful content on the TikTok app.
