KYIV: In a devastating incident, three Ukrainian military pilots have lost their lives after two L-39 trainer aircraft collided in mid-air over central Ukraine, according to an official statement from the country’s air force on Saturday.

The tragic collision has dealt a profound blow to Ukraine, which is on the cusp of embarking on a significant endeavor to expedite the training of its aircrews for newly acquired Western-donated F-16 fighter jets. Kyiv has secured pledges for up to 61 F-16s, and the loss of three skilled pilots is a somber setback for the nation’s military aviation aspirations.

Ukraine’s Air Force Condolences

The unfortunate accident transpired on Friday above the Zhytomyr region, situated to the west of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Among the pilots who lost their lives, one was recognized by the callsign “Juice” and had gained prominence through multiple interviews with international media.

In response to the tragic incident, the Air Force conveyed their deep condolences to the families of the fallen pilots, acknowledging the profound and irreplaceable loss that has befallen the entire nation. The Air Force communicated its message of sympathy via the Telegram app, underscoring that an ongoing investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the crash.
