KABUL: At least three people were killed, and seven others sustained serious injuries in an explosion at a hotel in the southeastern province of Khost, Afghanistan, the province’s media office said. The cause of the explosion remains shrouded in uncertainty, although the area has long been a hotspot for clashes between militants and their adversaries.
The blast took place at a city hotel frequented by Afghan people, said Mustaghfir Gurbaz, a police spokesperson in Khost. He said officers were investigating to ascertain what caused the explosion and who was behind it.
Security Situation in Khost Province
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though Afghanistan’s Taliban government has blamed the regional affiliate of the Islamic State group — known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province — for previous attacks.
For years, this region has been plagued by the presence of various militant groups, contributing to the volatility and ongoing conflict.
Amidst the tumultuous security landscape in Afghanistan, the administration under the Taliban has grappled with an insurgency led by the militant group Islamic State (IS). In recent months, IS terrorists have claimed responsibility for a series of lethal attacks targeting civilians, foreign nationals, and even Taliban security personnel.
The Taliban, having asserted their focus on ensuring stability within Afghanistan, have carried out several operations against IS cells in recent times, reflecting their commitment to counteracting the threat of extremism.
