Regional prosecutor Patrice Camberou said that a probe has been initiated to determine the reasons for the crash in southern France. AFP reported that criminal and forensic investigators were at the site of the crash.

The French army’s southern command confirmed that two of the three victims were army personnel from the 2nd combat helicopter regiment training center.

Regional firefighters said earlier they had been called in for an aircraft crash that had caused a fire in the nearby shrubbery that was rapidly extinguished.

The aircraft was located with the support of water-bombing helicopters, the fire service added.
