PARIS: Three persons were injured in a knife attack early on Saturday at the Gare de Lyon rail station in Paris, according to police. Authorities have ruled out terrorism at this stage and arrested the suspected attacker, who exhibited signs of mental disorders, as confirmed by Paris police chief Laurent Nunes.
“We found medicine on him which suggests he was undergoing treatment,” Nunes told reporters, emphasizing the mental health aspect of the incident.
The victims suffered varying degrees of injuries, with two sustaining light wounds and the third facing more serious injuries, though not deemed life-threatening, according to police reports.
The attacker, who possessed Italian residence permits and was legally in France, reportedly used both a knife and a hammer in the assault. While French media suggested that he was originally from Mali, police did not confirm these reports.
France has faced a series of militant attacks over the past decade, but occasional assaults by persons with mental health issues have also been reported.
