ISLAMABAD: Three Indonesian crew members are missing after a United Arab Emirates-registered tugboat sank in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting maritime authorities to launch a search and rescue operation in one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes, troubled by the escalated Middle East conflict.

Officials said the vessel was drawn through the strategic waterway linking the Arabian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The Strait carries a large portion of global energy supplies and stands practically closed due to exchanges of military strikes by Iran and the US.

Initial reports indicated that several crew members were rescued, but three Indonesian nationals remain unaccounted for as rescue teams continue operations in surrounding waters.

Maritime authorities said patrol units and rescue vessels have been deployed to locate the missing sailors, and efforts are ongoing despite challenging conditions in the narrow shipping corridor amid the ongoing war around it.

The cause of the sinking was not immediately clear, and an investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages, with a significant share of global oil shipments passing through daily.

Shipping in the area has been under heightened attention due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which has increased regional security concerns. Iran claimed control of the Strait and warned shipping lines to avoid the waterway after the US torpedoed an Iranian ship that it claimed was returning from naval exercises with the Indian navy.

Despite tensions and warnings, international shipping has partially continued, though maritime agencies and shipping companies have intensified monitoring and precautionary measures for vessels in the region.

Authorities said search operations will continue until the missing crew members are located, and further updates are expected as rescue teams report developments.
