ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON: Thousands of people in Washington were without power after the vandalization of at least three electrical substations in Tacoma following prolonged outages caused by blizzards and severe storms.
Power outages
According to the Pierce country Sheriff, electricity cuts affected around 14,000 consumers, and robberies were reported at two substations in Puget Sound Energy and Tacoma Public Utilities.
It was cited that despite forced entry into the fenced-in area, nothing was taken from both sites.
In a statement on its website, the department said that deputies were conducting initial investigations. “It is unclear if this was a coordinated attack on power systems or what was the motive behind it,” the statement said.
Earlier this month, a utility outlet in North Carolina was vandalised after power outages.
Utilities across the US had been strained by severe cold weather conditions, leaving more than 300,000 people without electricity from the winter storm.
In east Piece County, about 2,700 people serviced by Tacoma Public Utilities remained affected midday on Sunday after an initial 7,300 residents lost electricity in the area, about 45 miles (72 km) south of Seattle, Tacoma Public Utilities said in a post on Twitter.
