BEIJING: Thousands of people gathered on Saturday to celebrate the new year in China after a “tough” 2022 filled with lockdowns and a new outbreak of Covid-19.
Hundreds of citizens released balloons into the air when the clocks struck midnight as per tradition in the city where the epidemic began three years ago, before taking selfies with their friends.
A high school student, Wang, told Reuters, “In the past year, I feel that epidemic was very serious and some of my relatives have been admitted in the hospital,”. Wang hoped that their family members will be health in 2023.
New Year in China
Many citizens came in fancy dress and almost everybody wore masks as China sees a wave of coronavirus. Talking to the media, a local Wuhan said that they just wanted to spend a good time on the occasion of new year. Wuhan added that he was looking forward to 2023.

Similarly, many crowded the historic waterside walkway in Shanghai. Many people said that they came from Chengdu to celebrate the new year in Shanghai.
They said that they feel safe to enjoy the new year in china. A citizen said that people have been afraid to come out since the COVID-19 policy was loosened. He hoped that it will be better next year.
