LONDON: Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters rallied in London on Saturday, in the latest demonstration in the British capital demanding an immediate ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip and increased aid delivery for the war-ravaged territory.
Organized by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the rally commenced at Russell Square in the city center before proceeding to Trafalgar Square for a mid-afternoon demonstration.
While the majority of attendees voiced support for Palestine, a smaller contingent participated in a counter-protest in solidarity with Israel, with police units deployed to maintain separation between the two groups. The demonstration marked yet another instance of a significant pro-Palestinian mobilizations in London, as global attention remains fixed on the ongoing conflict and its humanitarian toll.
Organizers of the rally assert their rights to peaceful assembly and stress that law-breaking persons represent only a fraction of the broader movement. Sally Worgan, a 65-year-old retired social worker who traveled from Gloucestershire to participate, underscored the importance of demonstrating solidarity with Palestinians.
“We will keep marching,” affirmed Ben Jamal, one of the event’s organizers, highlighting the demonstrators’ calls for a permanent ceasefire and increased aid delivery to Gaza’s besieged population. Citing public opinion polls indicating significant support for their demands, Jamal emphasized the resolve of the pro-Palestinian movement.
As the rally progressed, London’s Metropolitan Police reported the arrest of one person on suspicion of a terrorism-related offense related to promoting support for a proscribed organization. The force had implemented a robust policing plan, including a pre-approved march route and a stipulated dispersal time.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had previously urged law enforcement to adopt a tougher stance against protesters at such gatherings, denouncing instances of intimidation, threats, and planned acts of violence.
