BANGKOK: Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will on Thursday deliver her government’s policy suggestion to parliament, headlined by plans to give away $13.4 billion in handouts to kickstart growth.
Political newcomer Paetongtarn’s cabinet was sworn in earlier this month following she won the backing of parliament to become Thailand’s youngest PM following the shock removal of predecessor Srettha Thavisin by a court decision. The polices mostly continue ally Srettha’s agenda and that of their Pheu Thai party, including debt restructuring and legalizing casinos to draw in investment.

The government is likely to give details of its signature plan for its ‘digital wallet’ handout of $300 to 50 million people, some of which PM Paetongtarn now says will be given in cash. The scheme has been criticized by economists as financially irresponsible, which the government discards. Paetongtarn, is making her debut appearance in parliament as country’s second female PM. Paetongtarn is the fourth member of her family to hold the top position.
