BANGKOK: In Thailand, a senior high school student died when an extinguisher exploded during a fire practice on his campus.
According to the city’s governor, the event at Bangkok’s Rajavinit Mathayom School harmed 21 more students. Seven people were sent to the hospital. The extinguisher had flown towards the victim, who was around 10 meters away, as a result of the explosion. According to rescuers, the extinguisher may have been malfunctioning due to sun or heat exposure.
The deceased student was in his senior year of high school. His age has not been determined. Police have been examining the incident’s cause while cordoning off the area still covered with debris. According to officials, the extinguishers used in the training have all been taken to the police forensics division.
According to the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, the rescue organization on the site, the exploding canister contained carbon dioxide. When the extinguishers run out of chemicals, they are routinely refilled, but “how and where they were refilled must be investigated, and safety valves must be checked,” according to the city’s police chief. The school is in the Dusit district, near several government offices.
Permanent Secretary Atthaphon Sangkhawasee added that officials from the Ministry of Education have also been sent to the school to investigate what took place. According to The Nation, he extended condolences to the family of the deceased student and stated that the ministry would assist and pay those affected.
