BANGKOK: Amidst the ongoing political debates and negotiations surrounding the formation of a new government, Thailand has found itself captivated by an unexpected event this week.

Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse, a 42-year-old Thai lawyer who has spent the last 27 years in the United States, has made a cheerful appearance in his homeland. This unanticipated visit marks his first return since his departure.

Vivacharawongse holds a significant background – he is the second son of King Vajiralongkorn and is one of four siblings who have been estranged from the royal family. For years, it was widely believed that they had been stripped of their royal titles and excluded from the line of succession to the throne. However, recent events have given rise to speculations about their potential rehabilitation and resurgence in royal affairs.

This intriguing narrative gained prominence as Thailand encountered a succession dilemma. The king’s eldest daughter, Princess Bajrakitiyabha, who had been the apparent heir to the throne, tragically collapsed last December and remains in a coma with minimal prospects of recovery.

In hushed conversations over the years, Thais had contemplated the reintegration of one of the estranged sons into the royal fold. Vacharaesorn’s unexpected visit might signify the beginning of such rehabilitation, although no official palace statement has confirmed this.

Born to King Vajiralongkorn’s former actress wife Sujiranee, from whom the king divorced in 1996, Vacharaesorn and his brothers found themselves exiled from Thailand along with their mother. Their sister, Princess Sirivanavari, was the only one brought back to live with their father. Despite the estrangement, the sons periodically published letters appealing for reconciliation with their father and a chance to return to their homeland, all to no avail.

During his initial days in Bangkok, Vacharaesorn embarked on a mix of tourist activities, revisiting the city, exploring temples, savoring Thai cuisine, and even taking rides in tuk-tuks. He expressed his elation to journalists, stating that returning was akin to a dream come true.

In addition to his leisurely activities, he also undertook seemingly official duties, including meetings with prominent religious figures and visiting a childcare center supported by the palace. For many observers, these actions showcase his potential for fulfilling royal responsibilities.

While living in the US, Vacharaesorn has been the most visible of the estranged siblings. He has actively engaged with the Thai community and demonstrated open support for the Thai monarchy. His demeanor and commitment suggest that he could be the most suitable for a more prominent role within the royal family.

Before her incapacitation, Princess Bajrakitiyabha stood out as a distinguished member of the royal lineage, having worked as a lawyer for the UN and serving as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria. The youngest child, 18-year-old Prince Dipangkorn, faces learning difficulties. It was previously assumed that Princess Bajrakitiyabha would step into the role of regent or possibly even ascend to the throne upon her father’s passing. However, Thai succession laws leave the monarch to designate their successor, a decision that King Vajiralongkorn has yet to make.

Could Vacharaesorn, a respected and well-regarded individual in the US, be the answer to these uncertainties? It’s premature to make such a proclamation. It’s plausible that his initial return is a tentative step, a trial run to assess his ability to navigate the public eye, royal protocols, and the intricate politics of Thailand’s royal court.

The intentions of King Vajiralongkorn himself remain ambiguous. His inner circle has exhibited volatile shifts in favour, leading to sudden disappearances from public view. Whoever orchestrated this homecoming of the prodigal son is undoubtedly exercising caution, fully aware of the complexities and potential repercussions that lie ahead. This unfolding story will continue to captivate observers as Thailand navigates these uncharted waters.
