BANGKOK: The Thai government announced on Wednesday that the number of Thai nationals killed in the conflict between Israel and the militant group Hamas has risen to 20, an increase from the previous figure of 18.

The foreign ministry reported an increase in Thais held hostage, now totaling 14, up from the previous count of 11. This update is based on unofficial reports from Thai citizens in Israel.

Following an attack on Saturday, approximately 150 people of various nationalities, including women and children, have been held by Hamas. Ministry spokeswoman Kanchana Patarachoke confirmed the updated numbers and mentioned that the count of wounded Thais has also grown to 13.

A repatriation flight carrying wounded Thais was expected to arrive in the capital on Thursday. Furthermore, over 5,000 Thai citizens have requested repatriation to Thailand, according to Kanchana.

It’s worth noting that there are roughly 30,000 Thais in Israel, mostly employed in agriculture, per Thailand’s labor ministry.

The conflict’s toll has continued to rise, with over 1,200 casualties reported in Israel, while Gaza officials have indicated around 900 people have been killed so far. Israel’s army reported finding the bodies of approximately 1,500 militants.
