ISLAMABAD/KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia on Wednesday said that electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla Inc would open an office in the Southeast Asian nation and also establish a network of charging stations for its cars.

Malaysia’s trade ministry said that Tesla’s application to import battery-run electric cars into Malaysia had been approved, and the company will open showrooms and services centers.

The ministry said that the United States firm’s presence in Malaysia is expected to generate skilled jobs and raise the participation of local companies in the Tesla ecosystem.

Malaysia, however, had yet to say when Tesla would open an office. Tesla, which Elon Musk runs, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
