RIO DE JANEIRO: Authorities in Brazil have foiled a terror plot when they apprehended two people in Sao Paulo state, the country’s Police claimed in a statement.
An official told AP on the condition of anonymity that the suspects were financed and recruited by a Lebanese group and plotted to target compounds tied to the Jewish community.
However, the police did not provide details regarding the suspects. Officials said police implemented 11 search warrants in Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, and the Federal District that were aimed at collecting proof of possible recruitment of people in Brazil for carrying out extremist actions in the country, saying that it was taking measures to target both recruiters and recruits.
Terror Plot Foiled in Brazil: Police
According to a local paper O Globo, police apprehended one of the two suspects when the two returned to the airport in Sao Paulo. The paper reported that there are two more targets for arrest in Lebanon. However, Police declined to share more information over the matter. According to media reports, Brazil has one of the global largest Lebanese populations.
